Walking Group Update

We have 3 walkers so far for May 19th’s walk. Please let Maureen know if you are planning to attend or feel free to turn up at 9:15am for 9:30am start. Bring a friend if you wish. The route hasn’t been decided yet so feel free to lead or put your suggestions forward in advance.

Please note that Maureen is not available for the walk on June 2nd as she will be covering the Coffee Shop on the Bank Holiday. We have decided to cancel the walk officially but if you are really keen, you can turn up at the Centre and see if anyone else is here to join you.

Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

As many of you will know, early in the pandemic in 2020, when good news was in short supply, we were very proud that Halton Community Association (HCA) was recognised with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QVAS).

The group of volunteers based in The Centre @ Halton are honoured and delighted by the QVAS award because it aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities and is the community equivalent of an M.B.E. The Queen’s Award not only serves to provide recognition of volunteer groups, but also demonstrates the high respect in which volunteering is held , especially  for the work done over the years to turnaround a rundown community centre, creating a hub where everyone is welcome from babies to those in their later years of life. The prestige associated with having the award will hopefully help to secure future grant funding for development projects such as outdoor toilet facilities at The Centre @ Halton.

We all know the value of voluntary effort to support communities not least in the difficult circumstances we are continuing to face in 2022.  In this Platinum Jubilee year, the QAVS Team at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport administers the Award and will happily help with any queries if you know of any likely candidates locally. You can contact them at queensaward@dcms.gov.uk or 0207 271 6206.

Groups must be nominated for the Award – self nomination is not permitted. A group (three or more people) can be nominated if it is based in the UK. The group has to have been volunteering for the benefit of people in the UK or overseas for at least three years and more than half its members must be volunteers who have the right of residence in the UK. It must provide a specific local benefit and Groups solely concerned with fundraising for charitable purposes or operating solely for the benefit of animals are not eligible.

For anyone who wants to know more about HCA and may be interested in volunteering, please look online at www.haltoncentre.org or call  01524 811316.
